OVIEDO NOTEBOOK BULLETS
-
Nationally-ranked Oviedo sends all 14 wrestlers to round two of the State
Championship series - the Region Championships, hosted by Lake Gibson high
school on 12-13 Feb in Lakeland, Florida.
-
Match of the day and likely the most probable as the Championship Finals
over the next two remaining weekend's of this 2010 State Championship
series; Erin O'Dell, Oviedo vs Frank Cousins, St Cloud. Both nationally
ranked wrestlers; both USA Wrestling Fargo All-Americans; Cousins a 2009
State Champion; O'Dell 3rd at the 2009 State Championships; the #1 and #2
ranked wrestlers in the state at 160. They banged, they scrambled, they
initiated and countered each other in chess match-like fashion. A little
blood involved in the fray. On this weekend Cousins prevailed 3-2. At
match end, the appreciative wrestling fans in attendance stood and clapped
in unison for the epic battle they had just witnessed. Week two in the
State Championships series looms.
-
Defending State Champion and two-time USA Wrestling Fargo All-American Chase
Gordon defeated previously unbeaten Justin Theile of Oak Ridge in the
Championship Finals.
-
Impressive wins on the day to ultimately vault them to qualification to the
Region Championships next week belong to Nick McLean and Eric Hedberg. Each
started the day unseeded. McLean pinned the #3 seed in the opening round,
and Hedberg toppled the #1 seed in the same opening round by a 6-3 final
tally.
-
Sophomore Doug Vollaro, a 3rd place state placer last year as a freshman and
a USA Wrestling Fargo All-American this past summer, surpassed Kenny Lester
for the team record of pins in a season at 35. Doug now holds the school
record with 37 early match enders. Lester's resume includes high school
State Champion, USA Wrestling Fargo National Champion, #1 ranked heavyweight
wrestler in the nation during his senior year, and current wrestler at
Arizona State University.
-
Just behind Vollaro in the final season run for most pins in a season for
the school record is Jay Taylor at 36 pins.
-
In the hunt and on the brink to break the Oviedo season record of 51 wins in
a season are Gordon (47), Joey Hefley (46), Taylor (46), Vollaro (46), Lee
Wildes (45), and Ray Rowland (44). That record is currently held by Justin
Fraga, who was a 2-time State Placer, a 2-time State Champion, and USA
Wrestling Fargo All-American. Justin recently graduated from Purdue
University where he wrestled and was an NCAA National Championships
qualifier, and he is a current member of the Oviedo coaching staff.
-
Quick pin of the day belongs to Alton Meeks - 10 seconds. In fact, Alton
practically took the day off with three pins totaling just one minute and 43
seconds of wrestling time....22 seconds in the Championship Finals.
