OVIEDO NOTEBOOK BULLETS
-
In a Region Championships tourney that featured the top three ranked teams
in the Florida 2A division, nationally-ranked Oviedo sends 10 wrestlers
to the Florida Finals State Championships held at The Lakeland Center in
Lakeland, Florida on 19-20 Feb.
-
Oviedo wins it 8th consecutive Region title.
-
Five of the top ten team finishers were from the District that Oviedo
competed in last weekend to qualify for the Region tournament.
-
In the toughest weight class of the tournament that saw a 3rd place finisher
from last year's State Championships not qualify this year, Oviedo's Erin
O'Dell and St Cloud's Frank Cousins, both USA Wrestling Fargo All-Americans,
faced-off again in the finals for the second weekend in a row of the State
Championship series, in what is anticipated to be another finals match-up
next week for the State Championship title at 160.
-
USA Wrestling Fargo All-American and state-ranked #1 Joey Hefley
claimed his Region Championship title over state-ranked #3 Justin McKay of
Land O'Lakes in the finals by score of 15-3.
-
Two-time USA Wrestling Fargo All-American, defending State Champion, and
state-ranked #1 Chase Gordon dispatched Oak Ridge's #3 state-ranked Justin
Thiele by score of 15-5 for a second straight Region Championship title.
Thiele's only losses on the season are to Gordon. Chase will wrestle for
the Oklahoma Sooners next year.
-
Gordon ties the team record for most wins in a season at 51. He now shares
that record with Justin Fraga, who placed 3rd at the State Championships his
freshman year, 2nd as a sophomore, and stood at the top of the State
Championships podium his last two years as an Oviedo wrestler. Justin was
also a USA Wrestling Fargo All-American. He was an NCAA Championships
qualifier while wrestling at Purdue University in the Big Ten Conference and
is now a current member of the Oviedo coaching staff.
-
Joining Gordon and Fraga as the only other wrestlers in the history of
Oviedo wrestling to ever hit the 50 win mark in a season are now Hefley, Jay
Taylor, and Doug Vollaro, all three Region Champs with 50 apiece. Looking
to also join the ranks of 50 wins in a season is Ray Rowland, currently at
47 victories.
-
Vollaro and Taylor are in a race to the finish for most team pins for the
year, with Vollaro up one at 39. Both have surpassed the previous team
record of 35 in a season, held by Kenny Lester. While at Oviedo, Lester was
a State Champion, a USA Wrestling Fargo National Champion, and ranked #1 in
the country in his weight class during his senior year. He currently
wrestles at Arizona State University.
-
Vollaro's win in the Region Championship finals was over a previously
undefeated 53-0 senior opponent. Doug is a 2009 USA Wrestling Fargo
All-American in freestyle.
-
Freshman Alton Meeks, a 2009 Tulsa Nationals Champion,
battled his undefeated senior and state-ranked #1 opponent for 4 overtimes
in the Region Championships finals at 215.
-
Although falling a match short from qualifying for the State Championship
tournament, sophomore Nick McLean finished the season in strong fashion. At
the District tournament, he was unseeded and upended the #3 seed en route to
qualifying for the Region tournament. In the first round of the Region
tournament he beat a District Champion 10-0 to open things up. At the
Region tournament, he scored important team points by going 3-2, losing only
to the Region Champion and third place finisher.
