The 4-time 3A State Champion Oviedo Men's Wrestling Team traveled to The Lakeland Center in Lakeland, FL to compete in the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) State Finals Championships on 20-21 February 2009.

Junior Chase Gordon became Oviedo's 21st State Champion at the 2009 FHSAA State Finals Championships, that amongst others from the Oviedo rolls include current University of Missouri Head Coach Brian Smith and Army Ranger Jon Godwin -- both members of the Oviedo Athletics Hall of Fame. After opening up his championship run with a 17-5 major decision in round one over East Lake senior Nick Fierro, Chase avenged one of just two losses on the season by defeating senior Oxsunn Ramirez of Southwest Miami by a score of 7-3. In the semifinal match-up, Chase faced 2008 state runner-up and senior Carlos Montero from Bloomingdale. With the score knotted at 3 each in regulation, Gordon displayed why he is a Team Captain and one of the hardest workers in the Oviedo wrestling room by getting the takedown in overtime to vault himself to the State Finals. His State Finals opponent was senior Reiny Parrado from Hialeah Goleman, the defending 140 pound State Champion. When the whistles stopped blowing and the score clock was at 0:00 in this Championship Finals match the score board read 6-5 in favor of Chase Gordon - 2009 STATE CHAMPION!

OVIEDO MEN'S WRESTLING NOTEBOOK BULLETS

Chase Gordon adds to his wrestling resume with the 2009 State Champion title an already captured All-American finish at the USA Wrestling National Championships in Fargo.
Gordon finishes the season as the team leader in wins at 46.
The top pinners on the team for 2009 are State Placers Erin O'Dell and Jay Taylor at 25 apiece.
Seven of the eight state qualifiers for Oviedo return for next season.
With Gordon's individual title, Oviedo as a team moves into 7th place for Most Individual Championships (21), All-Time amongst all team classifications in Florida Wrestling history.
Next up for the Oviedo wrestling program is a full spring and summer of freestyle and Greco-roman wrestling on the USA Wrestling circuit, culminating with the USA Wrestling Championships in Fargo, ND.
