OVIEDO MEN'S WRESTLING NOTEBOOK BULLETS
- Oviedo wins its seventh consecutive Region Championship team title.
- Eight wrestlers advance to the State Championship Finals -- seven of them underclassmen.
- Oviedo went four for four in the individual Championship Finals.
- After gutting through a flu virus last weekend at the District tourney to move ahead to week two of the State Series with a 4th place finish, senior Stephon Jenkins put on a healthy performance this weekend by claiming the Region Championship at 125. In doing so, he beat two District Champions; one by a 16-1 tech fall in the opening round. He also avenged both loses from last week's District event.
- Juniors Chase Gordon and Erin O'Dell plowed through their respective weight classes with impressive marks; Gordon with a tech fall, two pins, and a major decision, and O'Dell with two pins and two tech falls -- 16-1 in the semis and 16-0 in the Championship Final.
- Jay Taylor avenged his only loss this season to a Florida opponent by beating University high school opponent TJ Sturgeon, a 3rd place finisher at last year's State Championships, in the Region Championships match-up.
- Twenty three Oviedo wrestlers have competed in Varsity-level events this season, and 19 of those are underclassmen.
- With the State Championships next on the docket, three wrestlers are still in the hunt for the Oviedo Schalles Award for most pins -- O'Dell at 25, Taylor with 23, and Joey Hefley checking in with 21 Velcro-sponsored matches.
- Lordy, lordy look who's at 40 -- crossing the threshold of 40 wins on the season are Gordon (42), Taylor (41), and Hefley (40). Seeking club entry with a week left on the campaign are O'Dell (39), Jenkins (38), and Ray Rowland (36).
- Next up for the Oviedo wrestling program is the the State Championships at The Lakeland Center in Lakeland, FL on 20-21 February.
