Chris Alvarez Bulldogs His Way to a Championship
In lid lifter action to the Oviedo Men's Wrestling JV season at the Deland High
School Sports Complex in the 1st Annual Bulldog JV Tournament on November 18th
Chris Alvarez led his team's outstanding showing with an individual
championship, going 4-0 with four first period pins in the 145 lb
classification.
Oviedo Coach Rafael Valle in stating to Oviedo Coach Tom Coffman after
Alvarez's semifinal win to set him up for the championship match, "Chris
Alvarez is one of my favorite wrestlers. He is just an animal on the
mats".
Following suit to Alvarez's winning performance, Stephon Jenkins went 3-1 at
112 to take second. In the same weight class, Ryan Leatherman was 4-1 on the
day and laid claim to the bronze medal in finishing third.
At 103, Jon Tran was workmanlike with precision technique to go 3-1 in placing
third. Rounding out the Oviedo placers was 152 pounder Nick Barone with a 4th
place finish and four wins on the day.
In their individual tournament debuts on the roster of the 14th ranked team in
the nation the following wrestlers also trekked to Deland to do battle with
great mat success:

Sodaved Sum
Michael Denardo
John Pascual
Jordan Smith
The Bulldog JV Tournament included 14 teams--Oviedo, Deland, Flagler Palm
Coast, Lake Brantley, Winter Springs, Poinciana, New Smyrna, Lake Highland
Prep, Pine Ridge, St Cloud, West Orange, Lake Mary, Seminole, and Deltona.
Next up for the Oviedo Lions JV team is a Tri-Meet at Oviedo on November 30th.
