Jesse Robbins finally shook the monkey off his back that haunted him since his
eighth-grade year -- a feat equally as impressive as the gold medal he won for
Oviedo's wrestling program. Robbins, a senior, beat Bunnell Flagler Palm Coast
standout wrestler Anthony Onan 5-2 in the 171-pound division in the state
championship final. He hadn't stood at the medal podium as an individual since
winning a state title in his eighth-grade season while competing for Cocoa
Beach. "Every year, it seems I let my nerves get the best of me here," Robbins
said of his past performances in the state finals at Lakeland. "It feels good
to finally win it again this year as a senior." Robbins has signed with Arizona
State where he will join his older brother, Jason, who also was a state
champion at Oviedo. The Robbins brothers helped the Lions win four consecutive
state team title while being coached by their dad, J.D. Also winning state
individual titles for the Lions this year were Tyler Davis (145) and Brandon
Hatchett (160). In all, eight Oviedo wrestlers placed as the Lions (165.5
points) easily beat Homestead South Dade (115.5) for the title.
