OVIEDO MEN'S WRESTLING NOTEBOOK BULLETS
In winning its fourth consecutive 3A State Championship Oviedo becomes the only
team ever in the history of Florida high school wrestling to win four straight
titles in the big schools division (previous record of three consecutive held
by Brandon 1991-93 and Oviedo 2004-06).
In accumulating 165.5 team points for the State Championship title, Oviedo now
owns the top three team point totals at the State meet in the history of
Florida high school wrestling dating back to 1965, in the big schools division.
In 2005, 188.0; 2007, 165.5; and 2004, 163.5.
This year's 50 points margin of victory over runner-up South Dade is the fourth
largest margin of victory in the state's big school division history. The
previous three largest margins of victory include 2004 Oviedo 70.5; 2005 Oviedo
59.0; 1997 Brandon 54.5.
Oviedo is now tied for fourth in the state (all three classifications) for most
State Championship titles ever--tied with Fort Myers (1978, 1979, 1987, 1998)
and Hollywood McArthur (1979, 1986, 1988, 1989).
With the crowning of three new Oviedo individual State Champions the program
now has 20--tied for 8th all time in the State (all classifications).
Seniors Brandon Hatchett (Lehigh), Jesse Robbins (Arizona State), and Anthony
Salerno (Princeton) finish great high school wrestling careers and now move on
to college upon graduation to continue their wrestling endeavors at the NCAA
Division I level. Seniors Justin Tortora, Tyler Davis, and Nic Chase will also
continue on at the collegiate level in signings this spring.
In the team races for most individual wins and pins, Tyler Davis pulls down 40
wins in his State Championship season. Jake Schalles, tied with Davis going
into the State Championship tourney at 20 apiece, sticks two opponents to
Davis' one at the state meet to win the "Oviedo Schalles Award" for most pins
on the year.
Next up for the Oviedo Men's Wrestling Team is a full spring and summer of
wrestling that takes the team across the state, nation, and world and then
culminates this July at the Cadet and Junior National Championships in Fargo,
North Dakota.
