OVIEDO MEN'S WRESTLING NOTEBOOK BULLETS
In competing in its third nationally rated tourney in a one month time span (Beast of the East, Zac Jarzynka Memorial Ironman Tournament, and the Five Counties), Oviedo placed five wrestlers at the Five Counties tourney at Fountain Valley HS in California to finish in fifth place amongst 97 teams.
Oviedo placers at the Five Counties include Brandon Hatchett, Champion; Anthony Salerno, 3rd; Tyler Davis and Nic Chase, 5th; and Justin Tortora, 6th.
Nic Chase continues to step to the occasion at the national tourneys with great performances. As an unseeded wrestler at the Beast of the East, Nic knocked off two seeded wrestlers in falling a match from placing by a score of 3-2 in the match that would have put him in the medal round. At the Five Counties, he continued the same trend by entering unseeded and again knocking off the 4 and 5 seeds enroute to a 5th place finish.
Nic Chase and Tyler Davis lead the team in wins at 26 each, followed closely by Anthony Salerno at 25, with Brandon Hatchett, Justin Tortora, and John Christiansen checking in with 24 W's apiece. All but Christiansen are Seniors, with Christiansen a Junior.
In the race for the most team pins, Tyler Davis picked up three at the Five Counties to edge ahead of Jake Schalles, 14 to 12.
Next up for the Lions is a home Senior Night dual on January 18th with Orlando Olympia, 7th place at the Florida State Championships last season in the Florida 3A big schools division.
