Oviedo High School turned into headlock heaven on Friday. Everywhere you looked
it seemed as if wrestlers were either watching or participating in a match. And
as usual, J.D. Robbins and his Lions seemed to have a part in a lot of them.
Host Oviedo stands in first place after the first day of competition at the Zac
Jarzynka Memorial Ironman Wrestling Tournament.
The tournament was supposed to be a showdown with perennial powerhouse Brandon
High School, but after a seeding conflict, Brandon dropped out.
Despite that absence, several talented local wresters put themselves on
display. One of those wrestlers is Oviedo's Anthony Salerno. The senior earned
a spot in the semifinals in the 189-pound division by pinning Scotty Cayton
(Allen, Texas). Salerno, who intends to wrestle for Princeton University in the
fall, is happy with the way things are going for his team so far.
"I think if we all just focus in and keep doing what we're doing we should do
very well," Salerno said.
While Robbins and his assistant Tom Coffman are happy with the way things are
going, both men know the final round will be even more intense.
"The competition is going to be fierce," Coffman said. "Every battle is
probably going to be close."
Robbins believes that his team responds well to being the team with the target
on its back. South Dade heads into today's matches in second place, trailing
Oviedo by 10.5 points.
While Robbins and his team want to wrap the tournament today, the coach also
wants to get his team ready for its ultimate goals later in the season.
"We want to win this tournament," Robbins said. "If we do, great. If we don't,
it's not that bad. Our goal is the end of the year."
