OVIEDO MEN'S WRESTLING NOTEBOOK BULLETS
Oviedo runs its record in tourneys for the year to 2-0 by taking the title over
McEachern high school, nine-time big schools State Champions in Georgia.
With many of the McEachern and Oviedo wrestlers garnering top seeds in the
tourney, the team score remained close/deadlocked for most of the tourney with
little head-to-head competition amongst the two schools during the competition.
McEachern put eight in the finals and Oviedo countered with nine in the same
frame, with five head-to-head match-ups in the close-out session. At the end of
whistle blowing, Oviedo claimed eight individual titles and McEachern took just
three. In head-to-head match-ups Oviedo went 4-1 with McEachern.
Senior Anthony Salerno lead the Lions attack in the Peach state with four wins
on four pins at 189.
Freshman sensation Ryan Leatherman at 103 now leads the team in wins and pins
at 11 wins and seven pins. Close behind Leatherman in pins with six each are
Tyler Davis, Jake Schalles, and Anthony Salerno. Close behind in wins are
Justin Tortora, John Christiansen, Tyler Davis, and Brandon Hatchett with ten
wins each. Tortora, Davis, and Hatchett check in at 10-0 on the season.
In the semi-finals junior Josh Keebler, a three seed in the tourney, pinned the
two seed in 1:19, and who was coming off two first period sticks of his own in
the first two rounds to set up his finals match against two-time Florida state
placer Lance Day from The Bolles School. In that finals match-up, Keebler took
home the 130 championship with an 8-6 win to push his team enroute to victory.
Next up for the Lions grapplers is the nationally-prestigious Beast of the East
at the University of Delaware this coming weekend--the first entry of three
nationally ranked tourneys that the Oviedo Men's Wrestling Team will encounter
this season on their schedule.
