1. Blairstown, N.J. Blair Academy
Last year: 1st Returning starters: 7
Going for eighth consecutive No. 1 team finish and 25th consecutive
National Prep Championships title with only 2 seniors; Connecticut
transfers Valles and Cournoyer, 2004 Prep champion Russell transform
lower weights.
2. Lakewood, Ohio St. Edward
Last year: 2nd Returning starters: 10
Set state scoring record (209.5 points) last year in rebuilding year;
Harris, Palmer, Nemec state champions; only 4 matches not against Super
25 contenders; loss of HWT Kuhar (knee) could be setback.
3. Dallas, Texas Bishop Lynch
Last year: NR Returning starters: 9
With Ashmore brothers, Silver and Koepp, perhaps best pure tournament
team in America; 6 transfers headed by Adams (New Mexico) and Staines
(Louisiana); new upper weights crucial to top-5 finish.
4. Pennsburg, Pa. U. Perkiomen
Last year: NR Returning starters: 11
Lost only to Easton (twice) last year; third in 3A duals; state champ
Sheetz, placers Kemmerer, Fiorito lead 7 state qualifiers; killer
pre-holiday schedule includes Connellsville, Ironman, Beast of the East,
Easton.
5. Christiansburg, Va.
Last year: NR Returning starters: 10
Possibly a year away with 7 juniors led by two-time state champion
Gardner; two-time champion Epperly top senior; won AA title by record
197.5 points; Cadet National champion Meade high-profile transfer
6. Nazareth, Pa.
Last year: NR Returning starters: 9
Advanced to 3A dual semifinals; state champ Darling leads 2 returning
placers, 6 qualifiers; 4 transfers led by Ward brothers (Stroudsburg);
part of Virginia Duals field.
7. Orland Park, Ill. Carl Sandburg
Last year: 5th Returning starters: 11
Ended 12-year sectional losing streak to New Lenox Providence, followed
by first AA title; state champs McAuliffe, Precin top team best suited to
duals; again expected to battle Owatonna (Minn.) for Clash title
8. Owatonna, Minn.
Last year: 6th Returning starters: 10
Won 3A state last year, ending Apple Valleys four-year 3A winning
streak; state champion Meger leads three state placewinners; will start
only 5 seniors; biggest meet in school history Jan. 28 at No. 2 St.
Edward
9. Chesapeake, Va. Great Bridge
Last year: 3rd Returning starters: 10
Balance key with four-time state champion Patrick Bond graduated; middle
weights tough with two-time champion Frishkorn, champions Pittman,
Pearman and Gallagher and 9 placewinners.
10. Kansas City, Mo. Oak Park
Last year: NR Returning starters: 10
2004 Junior National champ Bailey struggled at Fargo due to injury, but
this team still heart of Missouri resurgence as ODonnell, Joiner, Nay
and Haynes sparkled; 8 returning placewinners.
11. Brandon, Fla.
Last year: 17th Returning starters: 9
Left impression at Fargo with 8 titles; 8 starters on national team; top
prospect Craig, Grajales combined for 3 Fargo crowns; 7 state
placewinners; The Streak could be 400 consecutive wins over 32 years.
12. Oviedo, Fla.
Last year: NR Returning starters: 9
Often ranked last year; returning starters averaged 38 wins; upper
weights Robbins, Green, Lester among nations best; five returning state
placewinners; Ironman performance could cement national ranking
13. Lombard, Ill. Montini
Last year: 23rd Returning starters: 11
Four-time defending A champions in AA this year; 15 state champions last
four years; Benefiel one of nations top juniors; scored over 100 points
first 2 years in Ironman; schedule rivals any AA power.
14. Davison, Mich.
Last year: 6th Returning starters: 11
Still strong despite Brent Metcalfs graduation and assistant coach
Chases untimely death; Reader, Chittick lead five placewinners; opens at
St. Edward; promising young upper weights.
15. Wingate, Pa. Bald Eagle Area
Last year: NR Returning starters: 10
Brothers Quentin, Landis Wright starred at Fargo; 3 state qualifiers; few
glowing records but 12 returnees, 10 in double figures in wins; Beast of
the East part of tough schedule; went 1-2 in 3A duals.
16. Pemberville, Ohio Eastwood
Last year: NR Returning starters: 11
Division 2 state runner-up; newcomer to elite wrestling scene doing it
the right way, following strong Fargo performance with Ironman
appearance; Llanas, Cubberly, Nachtrab lead 7 state qualifiers
17. Cincinnati, Ohio Arch. Moeller
Last year: NR Returning starters: 10
Great balance; fourth in Division 1 last season as five state
placewinners, nine qualifiers return; Ironman will be key early test
18. Parkersburg, W.Va. South
Last year: NR Returning starters: 11
Showed balance in top four finish at Virginia Duals and in memorable
state tournament, advancing 13 to semifinals, 9 to finals to win 3A state
by 115; Norman (189) NHSCA Junior Nationals champ.
19. El Reno, Okla.
Last year: 9th Returning starters: 10
Won last 7 4A double team titles; Shelton two-time champion; Hacker,
Frazier, James starred at Fargo; 9 returning state qualifiers, 6
placewinners
20. Heber City, Utah Wasatch
Last year: 12th Returning starters: 10
With last of Sandersons graduated, will rely on balance as 17 state
qualifiers return (2 per weight can qualify) ; advanced to final four at
Clash 3 consecutive years; 8 state placewinners had 30-plus wins.
21. St. Paris, Ohio Graham
Last year: 10th Returning starters: 8
Five-time defending Division 2 champions are tournament team this year;
returning champions Hart and Jordan lead tough lower and middle weights;
Cadet National champion Taylor a heralded freshman
22. Baltimore, Md. Mt. St. Joseph
Last year: NR Returning starters: 11
State independent champion, third in National Prep Championships;
champion Lewnes leads five National Prep placewinners; great schedule
includes Ironman, Beast of the East, Powerade tourneys in December.
23. South Plainfield, N.J.
Last year: NR Returning starters: 10
Defending Group 3 dual champions finished 18-0, also had two individual
state finalists; lower, middle weights are strengths
24. Vandergrift, Pa. Kiski Area
Last year: NR Returning starters: 9
Traditionally relies on balance rather than power; fourth in 3A duals
last season, including victory over Nazareth; losses to Connellsville and
Upper Perkiomen (twice)
25. (tie) Camden Wyoming, Del. Ceasar Rodney
Last year: NR Returning starters: 8
Despite Meades transfer to Christiansburg, returns 7 state placewinners
led by two-time state champions Moser and Cathell; victory over Paulsboro
(N.J.), close losses to Nazareth and Easton (Pa.).
